Algeria is separated into 48 regions (wilayas), 553 areas (daïras) and 1,541 districts (baladiyahs). Every territory, area, and region is named after its seat, which is typically the biggest city.
The regulatory divisions have changed a few times since freedom. While presenting new territories, the quantities of old areas are kept, consequently the non-sequential request. With their official numbers, presently (since 1983) they are.
